Department of Political Science
The Department of Political Science at the University of Mannheim is highly ranked both nationally and internationally for its quality of research, undergraduate teaching, and graduate training. With its emphasis on the use of quantitative and analytical methods, the Department of Political Science is in an excellent position for conducting research on a wide range of political phenomena. The main substantive areas of research and teaching include Comparative Politics and International Relations, with emphasis on political behavior, political economy, international conflict, contemporary history, and German and European politics.
Due its achievements and success, the state of Baden-Württemberg has decided to strengthen the department by providing additional resources to extend the scope of research and expand its academic staff. The areas of International Political Economy and International Conflict Research have become the two new additional foci in teaching and research. As a result, the Departement has added new faculty positions as well as student employment opportunities in these areas. The research activities of the Departement of Political Science are complemented by the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) and the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 884 "Political Economy of Reforms", which also offer additional training and research possibilities for students.
The Department of Political Science is one of the first in Germany to introduce a systematic and international program of study. It offers Bachelor, Master, and PhD. (doctoral) degree programs. Graduate students can participate in one of the Department's international graduate student exchange programs established with Washington University, St. Louis, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and the University of Milan. The strong emphasis on excellence in undergraduate teaching and graduate training, as well as the excellent reputation of the study programs provide graduates with exceptional job opportunities in academia and other fields.
